Flying Start / Playgroup

As part of Welsh Government’s two year old funding offer currently being rolled out across Wales, Bwlchgwyn Cabin Crew is approved to deliver Flying Start sessions. Eligible children can attend a Flying Start session each weekday during term time at their chosen setting. Cabin Crew run Flying Start sessions alongside Playgroup sessions, for those who are not eligible for funded sessions, between 9:00 – 11:30am each weekday during term time.

These sessions provide invaluable opportunity for children to build confidence and prepare them for an educational setting. Children also have the chance to make new friends who are likely be in the same year group. Flying Start/Playgroup parents have access to view their child/ren’s experiences via the Seesaw App and Facebook platforms. Playgroup/Flying Start is for children aged 2+ years, drinks and snacks are provided.

We follow the NHS and Welsh Government-backed accreditation scheme ‘Tiny Tums’ which is a best practice award given to early years childcare providers that provide healthy, balanced food and drink for children aged 0-4. As an accredited setting we have received training from public health dietitian’s and strictly follow government nutrition guidelines.

During these sessions we are supported by the Wrexham Flying Start advisory team, which ensures we are providing quality resources and interactions to the children throughout the whole session. They also support us with children’s behaviour, ALN and achieving our targets.

We offer free flow throughout the whole session so the children can choose to play inside or outside. We plan the activities to be as safe and secure as possible, while still seeking to provide risk, challenges and opportunities to learn.

We have initiated a book lending scheme whereby your child will be sent home with a different book each week for you to read with your child. Reading with your child has so many benefits and is a key element of the home learning environment, it will build on the strong and loving relationship you have by spending quality time together, develop your child’s communication skills, support their well-being and encouraging pre-literacy skills.

As part of our Flying Start and Playgroup sessions every Tuesday we also run a forest session. This is in a separate enclosed area on the school grounds and is accessed via the school field. These sessions are hugely popular and provide the children with amazing opportunities to boost confidence and self-esteem, encouraging physical health and development, improving social skills and developing independence and rick management.

At Bwlchgwyn Cabin Crew we recognise and place huge value in the benefits of all children spending time outdoors. During our forest sessions children will have opportunities to freely explore the forest space and fully engage with nature while experiencing all elements of weather. The children love to play and explore using mud and water, building confidence, coordination and strength using different swings, slides, tyres and rope courses. The children build connections and appreciation of living things through bird watching, feeding and lots of mini beast hunting. We encourage the children to work collaboratively and provide opportunities for them to work together and share ideas.

Welsh – Cynefin
As a setting it is important for us to recognise, value and reflect on the diversity of the young children and families in our setting. We take opportunities to develop the children’s Welsh language skills through playful interactions, songs and rhymes. As some children who attend the setting are from Welsh speaking homes and attend Welsh medium schools, we feel it is important to ensure we have some Welsh speaking staff within the team.
Makaton
Makaton is a language programme using signs and symbols to help people communicate. It is designed to support spoken language and the signs and symbols are used with speech, in spoken word order.
At Bwlchgwyn Cabin Crew we recognise that using signs can help children who have no speech or whose speech is unclear. Using symbols can help children who have limited speech and those who cannot, or prefer not to sign.
With Makaton, children and adults can communicate straight away using signs and symbols. Many people then drop the signs or symbols naturally at their own pace, as they develop speech.
Our staff have received Makaton training and use it daily in addition to the spoken word
